An Unacknowledged or Classified Association is the public chronicle of my investigation into Jay Herbert Reid, Jr., my grandfather and the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) former Director of Information who had a (still classified) relationship with the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).

My research seeks to answer the following questions:

  • How did Jay become involved with the CIA?

  • Did Jay work in intelligence or plans (also known as covert operations)?

  • Was the IMF his target or his cover?

  • Who else was in his CIA-affiliated network?

  • Who were the decision makers guiding his CIA activities?

  • What, precisely was he working on?

  • What were the end results?

I first discovered anomalies in Jay’s professional papers in 2021. Since then, through FOIA disclosures, archival materials, and declassified documents, I have begun to piece together the story.

From McCarthy-era witch hunts to foreign paramilitary interventions, coups d’etat, and assassinations, Jay’s personal and professional dealings brought him in close contact with some of the 20th century’s most controversial figures.

Where does he fit in the narrative?
